Johnnie Dodds Boulevard
Project Details
The project aimed to enhance around three miles of Johnnie Dodds Boulevard (U.S. Highway 17), stretching from just north of the Arthur J. Ravenel Jr. Bridge to the south side of the I-526 interchange, along with the associated frontage roads and side streets. The primary objective was constructing a new overpass to allow Johnnie Dodds Boulevard traffic to pass over Bowman Road.
The improvements included widening Johnnie Dodds Boulevard from two lanes to three lanes in both north and south directions, along with curb and gutter along the project's entire length. The frontage roads were also widened to provide one lane in each direction, with 4-foot wide, marked bicycle lanes and sidewalks. Other improvements included upgrading traffic signals and pedestrian crosswalks along Johnnie Dodds Boulevard, with auxiliary turn lanes wherever necessary. The project also entailed replacing the bridge on Bowman Road over Shem Creek, along with roadway and drainage improvements. Bowman Road was widened to six lanes from Johnnie Dodds Boulevard to Shem Creek. Street lighting and landscaping were also installed along the median and between Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and the frontage road system.
Atlantic South was responsible for utility coordination for Highway 17 and the frontage roads from the Arthur Ravenel Bridge to the I-526 Interchange for the road improvements to Johnnie Dodds Boulevard. The company also performed construction inspections, surveyed existing ponds, and delineated wetlands for the project's conceptual design phase.
